FORBIDDEN, TIO CHAIR

We are drawn to secrecy, to the forbidden, to things that should be neither said nor revealed.

It is forbidden to look directly at a welding flame without a mask when the “Tio Chair” is being made, as it would damage your vision. Even so, just like when we see a welder working by the roadside, our gaze is drawn to the flame.

Massproductions was founded with the “Tio Chair” in 2009. “Tio” is Swedish for “ten” and the name refers to the fact that the chair is made of 10 mm gauge steel wire that measures over 10 meters (14.378 to be precise). The steel wire is shaped by a computer-controlled bending machine and then undergoes various surface treatments, and welded together. The finished chair is made with zero waste.

Of the Ten Commandments, eight are things we are forbidden from doing. Nevertheless: people have always broken laws and rules; otherwise progress would be impossible. And those who defy bans are not always punished – on the contrary, sometimes they are rewarded.
