The fabric Silas is created as part of ongoing collaboration with Danish fabric producer Kvadrat and fashion designer Raf Simons with the aim to create unusual textures from natural materials

The Crown Armchair and Easy Chair is cleverly constructed, with a playful element to it. It’s backrests are perched on the armrests, seemingly unsupported but in fact relying on a strong, concealed steel joint.

Crown’s distinct design gives it open transparent surfaces, and creates new expressions depending on its placement in the room. This comfortable chair suits just as well around the desk or conference table, as the dining table.

“For this year’s collection, I was very interested in experimenting with woven versions of some of the traditional materials and techniques used in haute couture such as furs and knits.”

Said Simons in an interview with Dezeen.

The soft, voluminous Silas fabric, made from new wool and nylon, is created through a complex finishing process. The fabric has a velvet-like texture that is repeatedly unravelled and beaten, which makes it swell and resume its shape, and then steam-treated.

The exceptional volume and softness of Silas is the result of a complex finishing process. The original velvet structure of the textile is subjected to six days where the hair is repeatedly unraveled and beaten to make it swell and resume its shape. The whole procedure can also leads to variations in pile height. Finally it has a steam treatment which makes the surface extremely soft and voluminous as well to the richness and depth of colour.
